The Mens Basketball Competition continues as Team USA meets Team Spain on Saturday with Team USA a 15-point favorite. Team USA has failed to cover an opening number thus far in this tournament but is a perfect 3-0 in pool play. Spain is 3-0 in pool play as well and both teams have qualified for the medal round of 8. So this game is for seeding purposes, as if the United States or Spain were to go a perfect 5-0 in pool play would get a weaker opponent in the round of 8. My concern here for Team USA is their defense at the point. Jason Kidd and Chris Paul must try and slow down the dribble penetration of the young and quick guards on Team Spain. Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Kobe Bryant will use up a lot of energy on the defensive end. If teammates are forced to help it creates offensive opportunities for Spain with point guard Jose Calderon engineering the offense and creating space on the court for Pau and Marc Gasol. Both these teams figure to face one another in the Gold Medal game and that’s where Team USA will make adjustments to counter the offensive attack. But in this meeting if you want to cash a ticket you better take the points behind the depth of Spain. Take Spain +15.
